Nobels Fredspris 2009
Den Norske Nobelkomite har bestemt at Nobels fredspris for 2009 skal tildeles president Barack Obama for hans ekstraordinære innsats for å styrke internasjonalt diplomati og mellomfolkelig samarbeid. Komiteen har lagt spesiell vekt på Obamas visjon om og arbeid for en verden uten atomvåpen.
Obama har som president skapt et nytt klima i internasjonal politikk. Multilateralt diplomati står igjen sentralt, med vekt på den rolle FN og andre internasjonale institusjoner kan spille. Dialog og forhandlinger foretrekkes som virkemiddel for å løse selv de vanskeligste internasjonale konflikter. Visjonen om en verden uten atomvåpen har på en kraftfull måte revitalisert forhandlinger om nedrustning og rustningskontroll. Gjennom Obamas initiativ spiller USA nå en mer konstruktiv rolle i å møte de store klimautfordringene verden står overfor. Demokrati og menneskerettigheter skal styrkes.
Det er sjelden at en person i den grad som Obama har fanget verdens oppmerksomhet og tent et håp blant verdens folk om en bedre framtid. Hans diplomati er basert på forestillingen om at de som skal lede verden, må gjøre det på grunnlag av verdier og holdninger som deles av størstedelen av jordens befolkning.
Gjennom 108 år har Den Norske Nobelkomite prøvd å stimulere nettopp den internasjonale politikk og de holdninger som Obama nå er den ledende talsmann for i verden. Komiteen vil slutte seg til Obamas appell om at "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

The US president received an award in the faint hope that he will succeed in the future. That's how desperate the Middle East situation has become.
His Middle East policy is collapsing. The Israelis have taunted him by ignoring his demand for an end to settlement-building and by continuing to build their colonies on Arab land. His special envoy is bluntly told by the Israelis that an Arab-Israel peace will take "many years". Now he wants the Palestinians to talk peace to Israel without conditions.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee
The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.
Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.
Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.
For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."
